The Texas GOP has accidentally passed a motion suggesting that homosexuality is a behaviour “shared by the majority of Texans”.

The Republican Party added the plank to its platform this week at its state convention – to disavow homosexuality on the grounds of religion.

The provision reads: “Homosexuality is a chosen behavior that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truths that has been ordained by God in the Bible, recognized by our nations founders, and shared by the majority of Texans.”

However, Lone Star Q points out that due to some rather stodgy grammar, on paper the motion accidentally has a very different meaning.

The singular ‘has been’ is used instead of ‘have been’ – a change which makes sense if you’re referring to the homosexuality (‘Homosexuality has been…’) but not the supposed truths about it (Truths that has been…’).

Due to the shaky syntax, the motion effectively flows: “Homosexuality is a chosen behavior that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truths that has been ordained by God in the Bible, recognized by our nation’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans.”

Party officials did not respond to requests to comment from Reuters.

Earlier this year, Texas was named the US state that loves to watch the most gay pornography, despite having some of the worst laws for gay or lesbian people.

The state is currently suing President Obama for his support of transgender rights.

A Republican Sheriff of a major Texas county recently threatened to assault any transgender women he finds using public bathrooms.

Tracy Murphfree is running to be the new sheriff of Denton County on a Republican ticket – and has no Democratic opponent.

He wrote: “This whole bathroom thing is craziness I have never seen. All I can say is this.

“If my little girl is in a public women’s restroom and a man, regardless of how he may identify goes into that bathroom.

“He will then identify as John Doe until he wakes up in what ever hospital he may be taken to.

“How you identify does not trump my little girls [sic] safety.”
