Political leader locks lips with MP during debate in parliament (VIDEO)

The politician’s passionate embrace soon went viral.

In the middle of tough coalition talks Pablo Iglesias – leader of the left-wing movement Podemos – congratulated a fellow member of parliament, Xavier Domenech, with a kiss on the lips.

Iglesias and Domenech – who leads a left-wing group of Catalan nationalist parties – have greeted each in a similar fashion before.

However, their most recent love in was captured by TV cameras – as it took place in the middle of the Spanish parliamentary chamber during the middle of an investiture debate in front of their conservative rivals – whose shocked reactions at the kiss add to the clip’s charm.

Supporters of the pair quickly took to Twitter to show their appreciation of the fraternal embrace.

“How beautiful!” said one Podemos fan.

“The kiss shows how things have changed,” commented another.

Unsurprisingly, not everyone was impressed.

“I’ve seen it all in Congress,” commented one Twitter user. “I am going to study. This is not serious.”

Some fans compared the smooch to other famous political kisses – such as this fraternal embrace between Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and East German leader Erich Honecker.

The “socialist fraternal kiss” – a series of pecks on the cheek or lips to express close friendship – was a common practice among communist leaders during the Cold War, but seems to have since fallen out of favour in recent years.

Spain celebrated a decade since of allowing same-sex couples to tie the knot last year.

The country became one of the most progressive in Europe in 2005, when its newly-elected Socialist government moved to legalise same-sex marriage and adoption.

A total of 31,610 same-sex couples have tied the knot in the country in the decade since weddings began – the first being Emilio Menendez and Carlos Baturin, who married after 30 years together.
