Top Premier League football teams Arsenal and Man United have made a landmark commitment to tackle homophobia.

The two teams showed commitment to Stonewall and Football v Homophobia.

They exchanged pairs of giant rainbow laces before kicking off Sunday’s Barclays Premier League game at Old Trafford.

The laces are a symbol of Stonewall’s campaign against discrimination in sport.

Manchester United has also agreed to take part in a match against Stonewall to mark the charity’s 25th anniversary.

Speaking of United’s support, Stonewall chief executive Ruth Hunt said: “We’re thrilled that Manchester United and Arsenal have pledged their support to the Rainbow Laces campaign. By doing so, they are stepping up as allies to LGBT people and showing their commitment to making their clubs inclusive and supportive for LGBT players, supporters and members of staff.

“We hope that other clubs and sports will follow their lead and lace up to change sport.”

More information about rainbow laces, and Stonewall is available at the charity’s website, and followers have used the hashtag #rainbowlaces for the coverage.
