Florida just tried, but failed, to protect LGBT people against discrimination

The US state of Florida has tried, but failed, to outlaw anti-LGBT discrimination.

LGBT people in 30 states in the US still face discrimination at work or otherwise, because of a lack of discrimination protections in law.

And in some states, such as Indiana, extra laws have been passed bolstering “religious freedom”, and making it even easier to discriminate against LGBT people.

Despite efforts, the state of Florida has tried and failed to protect its LGBT citizens.

The bill, which failed yesterday, was backed by cross-party members from the Democrats and Republicans.

It died in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Despite its failing, the bill got further than its nine predecessors hoping to do the same thing.

A lawmaker in Florida in October tabled a bill that would permit people to refuse to serve people because they are gay.

Republican state representative Julio Gonzalez introduced the so-called ‘religious freedom’ law, which would allow small businesses to reject LGBT people on ‘conscience’ grounds.

Campaigners have appealed to the Federal Government to improve LGBT protections.
