The head of a Christian charity has claimed that transgender women are “sexually perverted” and “predators” in a diatribe attacking an LGBT rights law.
Franklin Graham, the son of Christian evangelist Billy Graham, is the President of international charity Samaritan’s Purse.
He is listed as a trustee of Samaritan’s Purse UK, which runs the annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal – but is also an extremist opponent of LGBT rights.
He wrote: “The so-called ‘Nondiscrimination Ordinance’ was defeated last year in Charlotte, NC, after public outcry and tens of thousands of emails from concerned citizens…but now it has been brought back to life.
“There’s no question, this is a dangerous idea. This literally opens the doors—the bathroom doors—to predators and sexually perverted people.”
In case there was any doubt about to whom he’s referring, Graham explained: “Each section of the proposed ordinance has wording to include ‘gender identity’.
“Gender identity is what an individual ‘feels’ their gender is regardless of the biological reality.
“So any man can say they feel like a woman that day and enter the women’s restroom at any public facility or the showers at public gyms by mandate of law. That’s absurd!”
He added: “LGBT activists are trying to hook their caboose to the ‘freedom train’ and drag their immoral agenda into our communities by claiming that this is a civil rights issue.
“Civil rights issues are very real and important—but don’t be fooled, this isn’t one of them. I heard one African-American minister say recently that ‘the freedom train doesn’t stop at Sodom and Gomorrah’.”
It does apparently stop in the Kremlin, though.
In a recent interview with a Russian newspaper, Graham praised Vladimir Putin’s support for anti-gay laws – and claimed that homosexuals “take people’s children”.
Repeating disturbing rhetoric often used by anti-LGBT vigilantes in Russia, he said: “Homosexuals cannot have children, they can take other people’s children.”
He added: “I very much appreciate that President Putin is protecting Russian young people against homosexual propaganda. If only to give them the opportunity to grow up and make a decision for themselves.”
Despite his slew of extremist comments, the Christmas Shoebox Appeal run by Graham’s charity enjoys mainstream support in schools.
