Lady Gaga to perform David Bowie tribute at the Grammys
The singer is to perform an ‘experimental’ tribute to the musical icon.
Lady Gaga is to honour her “inspiration” David Bowie with an “experimental tribute” at the Grammys later this month.
The singer says she wants to express her “love” for Bowie and wanted to pay tribute to the glam rock legend she says “healed many” with his music.
“When I fell in love with David Bowie, when I was living on the Lower East Side, I always felt that his glamour was something he was using to express a message to people that was very healing for their souls,” she told the Hollywood Reporter following Bowie’s death last month.
“He is a true, true artist and I don’t know if I ever went ‘Oh, I’m going to be that way like this,’ or if I arrived upon it slowly, realising it was my calling and that’s what drew me to him.”
Bowie is also set to be honoured with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony on February 15.
“We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year’s show, but when David passed – almost in a single moment – we knew we had to change direction,” said Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich.
“We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honour David. She’s perfect for it.”
A host of other musicians have paid musical tribute to the star – who recently lost his battle with cancer after a year long private battle with the disease.
Madonna was one of the first, as she performed ‘Rebel Rebel’ during the latest stop on her Rebel Heart tour.
Elton John was quick to follow Madge’s lead, performing a special version of ‘Space Oddity’ during a private gig.
