The ABC network has said it will not run a trailer for the film Carol, unless a lesbian love scene is edited out.

According to Page Six, ABC has asked the Weinstein Company studio to “making adjustments to fit network TV execs’ requests” to the ad for the Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett film.

ABC had asked for Weinstein to “provide more coverage” of Mara and Blanchett, whose bare shoulders are briefly shown during a kissing scene in the advert.

The advert had been scheduled for during the Super Bowl on 7 February.

The studio has agreed to make changes to the advert, according to reports.

Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt, the film follows Mara and Blanchett’s characters’ relationship.

Set in the 1950s, the film shows that the women must make sacrifices in order to be together.

The film has been critically acclaimed, but it is believed the Superbowl spot will help to boost box office takings.
