The Australian actress has been tipped for Oscars glory following her stellar performance as the repressed housewife who falls in love with a younger woman – played by Rooney Mara.

After it was announced she had won the Desert Palm Achievement Award – Actress at the ceremony over the weekend, the star threw her hands up and danced on stage.

Other winners at the awards show in California included Johnny Depp, Matt Damon and Saoirse Ronan.

Speaking of her new role in the film, Blanchett said it can be frustrating playing a gay character because many people expect their own relationships to be represented.

“The problem is that when you represent a character in a same-sex relationship, it’s like you have to represent them all, ” she said.

“You become a spokesperson, which really isn’t the point.

“When the time comes that we have a diversity of same-sex couples in film, then the problem is solved, I don’t have to stand for everyone.”

In the run up to the film’s release, Blanchett also revealed that an answer she gave to a journalist concerning her sexuality was intentionally vague to make a point.

Blanchett was asked if she had been in relationships with women, to which she answered “Yes, many times.”

“I also just played Mary Mapes, who’s a journalist. No one asked me how long I’d been to journalism school.” she told The Guardian.
