Anti-gay marriage group NOM declares funding ’emergency’ as donations dry up

The anti-gay National Organisation for Marriage has declared a funding crisis – after a critical shortfall in donations.

The National Organisation for Marriage failed to stop same-sex marriage becoming law in all 50 states, but still attracts a huge amount of support from Republicans.

Though the pro-equality Freedom to Marry group confirmed its closure in July following the Supreme Court ruling, NOM continues to operate.

President Brian Brown has claimed that people will realise the “lie” of same-sex marriage “as they witness the reality of children suffering” – as he fights a largely-futile, aggressive campaign to try and re-ban gay weddings.

However, it appears that even for NOM’s shadowy donors, there’s a point where enough is enough – and the group has now repeatedly warned of a critical donation shortfall.

The group has sent no less than twelve messages to all supporters soliciting funding in the past fortnight, begging for help as it falls short of targets.

Brown wrote in one email: “As the end of year approaches, I have to sound the alarm. NOM exists only because of your generous support and we raise most of our funds in our year-end membership drive.

“It’s tough to say it, but we’re almost out of time, and we’re only around halfway to our goal. We’re not going to make it unless you step to the plate.”

Another email adds: “As the clock ticks toward the New Year, I find myself anxiously awaiting each fundraising report… Please make an emergency year-end financial contribution to support NOM.”

However, the group’s emails have grown more and more frantic – with Brown upping the ante as the New Year deadline approaches.

A third email warns: “I’m really getting concerned that so many of our supporters have not responded with their end-of-year gift.”

A fourth: “NOM has thousands of supporters, not hundreds, which means that a lot of people have not yet done their fair share.”

It appears that by the group’s own admission, their “thousands” of supporters just aren’t willing to support them any more.

Earlier this year, the group was compelled to reveal donor information that showed Catholic groups had previously contributed
