Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara have both been nominated for best actress, whilst director Todd Haynes has been nominated for best director.

Also nominated for best actress is Alicia Vikander for her performance in The Danish Girl, which scored a total of three nominations including best actor for Eddie Redmayne and best score.

Also announced were the TV nominations where Transparent and Orange is the New Black will go head to head for the Best TV comedy award, as well as securing acting nominations for Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light and Uzo Aduba.

Carol, an adaptation of the classic same-sex 1950s romance novel The Price of Salt, stars Blanchett as the recently divorced Carol Aird who falls for department store employee Therese Belivet played by Mara.

The film has scored rave reviews since it’s release earlier this month, and is being touted by many for Oscars success early next year.

However, The Danish Girl’s critical reception was more lukewarm.

But praise has been heaped on actor Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of Lili Elbe, one of the first women in the world to receive gender reassignment surgery.

The stars of both films have been vocal about LGBT issues since they began promoting the films earlier this year.

Eddie Redmayne recently said that he thinks it is shocking that trans issues haven’t improved much since Lili Elbe’s time, and has called for better education on transgender issues.

He also admitted that playing a trans woman made him feel vulnerable.
