The author compared the two after Trump proposed America ban all Muslims.
JK Rowling has leaped to the defence of one her iconic characters – but this time, it isn’t Harry, Hermione or Ron she is defending.
The bestselling author has been forced to stand up for the biggest baddie in all of the wizarding world, after Twitter users compared Voldemort to an “even bigger villain” – US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Trump sparked outrage yesterday when he called for all Muslims to be barred from entering the United States in the wake of terrorism attacks in Paris and California.
His comments have been universally criticised by fellow politicians, activists and Muslim leaders, and have seen him compared to host of infamous dictators and fascists – including fictional character Lord Voldemort.
“The only way to stop Donald Trump is to destroy his Horcruxes,” wrote one user.
“The wig is definitely one. If you need me I’ll be finding the other six.”
“My theory is that Trump is Voldemort & if the media stops saying his name, Harry Potter will come destroy him,” added another.
However, the author of the Harry Potter books was quick to weigh in on the issue – saying Trump is not comparable to Lord Voldemort – because he is far worse.
“How horrible,” she wrote. “Voldermort was nowhere near as bad.”
Rowling has become known for giving brilliant responses on social media.
Highlights include a recent response to the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), who took offence – the WBC, taking offence?!? – to the idea of Rowling’s creation Dumbledore marrying fellow wizard Gandalf.
“Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls,” Rowling wrote.
She has also used Twitter to support her legion of LGBT fans, offering words of wisdom and comforting advice to those struggling with their sexuality.
Meanwhile, Republican frontrunner Trump has been branded a “dangerous extremist” by opponents for his claims – after saying that Muslim-Americans should be forced to wear ID badges, while foreign Muslims are banned from travelling to the US altogether.
But who do you think is worse – Trump or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named?
