Uber and Bill Gates team up for World AIDS Day campaign
A new World AIDS Day campaign sees cab company Uber team up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to fight HIV/AIDS.
Users of the Uber app in the US will receive a message at the end of their ride asking them if they will donate $5.
Not only that, but the sum of all donations made on World AIDS Day will also be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The scheme is not available in the UK, but users are still prompted to visit the site to get involved.
As well as prompts to donate, the cars in the app have also turned red to signify the app’s partnership with RED.
Earlier this year, Uber and RED also joined up to launch UberEATS, which provides a food delivery service to users.
Today’s campaign is part of efforts to end the AIDS epidemic in the next fifteen years.
2030 is also the year by which Bill Gates predicted there would be revolutionary new drugs to treat HIV, as well as a vaccine.
In January, he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he thought that a vaccine was still just out of reach, but that it would be attainable soon.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was set up in 2000 by the billionaires, and in their annual letter about the work of the organisation this year, said: “When we reach that point in the region with the most dense HIV transmission in the world, cases will start going down everywhere around the globe for the first time since the disease was discovered more than 30 years ago.”
Bill Gates has donated over $30 million (£20 million) to the foundation.
