Facebook will now allow same-sex employees paid ‘baby leave’

Facebook have announced that they are expanding their maternity/paternity benefits to include employees around the world in same-sex families for the first time.

Now all Facebook employees, regardless of where in the world they live, will receive four months paid leave when they have children.

Lori Matloff Goler, president of HR at Facebook, explained in a Facebook post “This expanded benefit primarily affects new fathers and people in same-sex relationships outside the U.S

“It will not alter the existing maternity leave currently available to all employees worldwide.

“In reviewing our parental leave policies, we have decided to make this change because it’s the right thing to do for our people and their families.”

The new benefit can be taken anytime up to a year after a child is born or adopted.

This comes after CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that he will be taking two months leave from the company when he becomes a father.

Currently in the UK couples qualify for up to one year of maternity leave.

Couples also get a statutory maternity pay of 90% of their average weekly earnings for the first six weeks and then a reduced rate for the rest of the year.
