Nobody puts Baby in a corner when it comes to sexuality

Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey has  said there is “at least 31 flavours of sexuality” – and spoken about portraying a probably-bisexual character.

The actress, who played Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman in the iconic film, spoke to the Metro about her new role in US comedy Red Oaks – in which her character is outed as a lesbian “at least technically bisexual” by her husband.

She told the newspaper: “What’s really interesting is the person who was cast as Baby is the same person who has been cast as Judy Meyers in Red Oaks.

“I am the constant in both characters, and sexuality plays a key part in that movie and this show. I think sexuality is such an enormous part of a healthy life.”

Asked whether she has a ‘bisexual flavour’ herself, the actress responded: “I feel myself very straight… there’s enough bisexuality in me but I wouldn’t say that I am because I know this is the press and I have to be very careful.

“But I think sexual energy is like water and it finds its way to where it has to go.

“I’m with my husband, happily, but the idea of labelling – bisexual, heterosexual – we know there are at least 31 flavours of sexuality.”

The actress previously spoke about her happiness after her father – Cabaret star Joel Grey – came out at the age of 82.

She told PEOPLE previously: “I feel very happy for my dad that he has come to a point in his life where he feels safe and comfortable enough to declare himself in a public way as a gay man.”

“Mostly because the more people are free to own their true nature and can hopefully come closer to love and accept themselves as they really are, no matter what age, no matter how long it takes, to finally be free of the lies or half truths, it is freedom.”
