Columnist Katie Hopkins has claimed that “100 percent” of British Muslims want homosexuality to be banned.

The former reality TV star made the comments in her column for the Daily Mail, in which she suggested that all Muslim culture ‘perpetuates’ terrorist attacks.

She claimed: “What we are not allowed to think is that anything intrinsic to Muslim culture perpetuates these atrocities… and what politicians would have us believe is that in no way are the acts of suicide bombers linked to a religion which encourages exactly that.

“And yet parallels are easily drawn. If 27% of British Muslims had sympathy with the Charlie Hebdo attacks and 100% think homosexuality should be banned, just how wide is the gulf between mainstream Muslims and ISIS stalwarts throwing gay men from buildings or emptying Kalashnikov’s into the crowds.”

The news will be surprising for the growing number of LGBT Muslim groups such as Imaan, who are presumably very shocked to find out they want to ban themselves.

The columnist appears to be referencing a six year old Gallup poll, which asked people whether they personally believe homosexual acts are morally acceptable. The poll did not ask if homosexual acts should be legal or banned.

The 2009 data was extrapolated from a relatively small sample of 504 people, selected “from areas where the Muslim population was 5% or more”.

At the time, just 58 percent of Brits thought homosexuality was morally acceptable. 0 percent of those polled who identified as Muslim thought homosexuality was morally acceptable, though higher figures were reported in France and Germany.

However, critics at the time pointed out this does not necessarily indicate support for a ban, and highlighted the relatively small sample size.

Support for LGBT rights has grown massively across all demographic groups since 2009.
