Sam Smith confirms he is singing James Bond theme

Smith has consistently shrugged off reports that he is set to record the theme for Spectre, the 24th Bond film and the fourth featuring Daniel Craig in the lead role.

However, he this week confirmed that he will indeed be doing so – after tweeting a black-and-white picture of a ring with an ‘octopus’ logo on.

The symbol is the logo of the sinister Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion (SPECTRE), that features in the original Ian Fleming novels that are the basis of the upcoming film.

The singer follows a long line of iconic singers to record a theme for the spy films – following in the footsteps of Shirley Bassey, Adele and Madonna.

Speaking to Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, he said: “I love the song so much… it’s the quickest I’ve ever written a song – it took 20 minutes… and [the Bond producers] loved it!

“This is one of the highlights of my career.

“I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations.

“I’m so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been a top secret mission of my own.”

The track, Writing’s on the Wall, is due for release on September 25.  Spectre is due for release on October 26.

The singer, who came out as gay last year, previously joked that he enjoys the idea of people who oppose LGBT rights listening to his music.

He said that he has fans who still have no idea about his sexuality, which is not overtly referenced in his music, adding: “I like the idea that there may be homophobic guys who listen to my record and they have no clue that I’m gay!”

Smith does not explicitly refer to a male love interest in his music, explaining previously: “I don’t want to limit to just one community. I want to reach everyone, gay people, lesbians, transsexuals, straight people, Catholics, anyone.”
