Miley Cyrus confirms she is pansexual

Miley Cyrus has confirmed she identifies as “pansexual” – and not bisexual as widely reported in the media.

The star revealed she had dated men and women earlier this year, when she said: “There are times in my life where I’ve had boyfriends or girlfriends. I’m not hiding my sexuality. For me, I don’t want to label myself as anything.”

After the interview, the mainstream press rushed to label the star “bisexual” – with the Daily Mail, the Mirror, Billboard, and even other LGBT publications repeatedly labelling the star as such.

However, in a new interview with Elle Magazine, Cyrus confirms that she identifies as pansexual – attraction to people regardless of sex or gender identity – rather than bisexual.

She told the magazine: “I’m very open about it – I’m pansexual. But I’m not in a relationship. I’m 22, I’m going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I’m with.”

The former Disney actress also spoke about using her body as a weapon in order to get attention to speak about real issues.

She said: “If you get your tits out, and they are all looking, then you can use that space to say something and get them to listen.”

The star says she has no plans to settle down just yet – with a person of any gender.

She said previously: “It has a lot to do with being a feminist, but I’m finally O.K. with being alone. I think that’s something we have to talk about more: that you can be alone.

“There are times in my life where I’ve had boyfriends or girlfriends. And there are times where I just love being with myself and don’t want to give part of myself away to someone else.

“I think that’s a new freedom for women, especially. I don’t know that my mother would have been able to be 22 and secure in being alone. But my future doesn’t rely on having a partner.”

Earlier this year, Cyrus explained the difference for her between dating men and women: “That made me feel [dating a man] like I had to be a femme-bot, which I’m not. And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, ‘Oh sh-t, she’s going to need someone to protect her, so I’m going to need to have this macho energy.’ And that didn’t feel right either.”
