PinkNews readers are less gay than you think

Think PinkNews readers are all gay? Think again!

A YouGov survey earlier this month found that just 46% of young people in the UK would rank themselves as ‘exclusively’ heterosexual – compared to 49% who picked something else.

PinkNews readers are less gay than you think

The poll asked 1632 people to plot themselves on a Kinsey scale of sexuality, from 0 (exclusively heterosexual) to 6 (exclusively homosexual) – and found that young people were much less likely to be at either of the ends, and are more likely to have a fluid sexuality.

When PinkNews carried out an informal poll of our readers, we wondered if the results would be the same in the LGBT community – and were surprised by the result.

Of the 27,705 PinkNews readers who have answered the poll to date, 24% ranked themselves as exclusively gay, while 8% were exclusively straight.

Meanwhile, 68% of those polled ranked themselves as somewhere between 1 and 5 on the scale.

24% described themselves as ‘predominantly straight’, compared to 28% ranking themselves as ‘predominantly’ gay.

Overall, a third of those who answered the poll were either exclusively or predominantly heterosexual – while 52% are exclusively or predominantly homosexual. 16% said they were equally homosexual and heterosexual.

We also recently asked 300 men on hook-up app Grindr to rank themselves on the Kinsey scale – and found that a surprising number weren’t ‘100% gay’.

If you haven’t already done so, answer the poll below (…or find us on Grindr!).
