A surprising number of Republicans have had gay sex

A survey has found that a surprising number of Republicans have had gay sex.

A poll carried out by YouGov in the United States this week found that in the country a third of under-30s are more likely to identify as straight.

However, when asked: “Have you ever had a sexual experience with a member of the same sex?”, 18% of Americans say yes and 82% say no. Among those who describe themselves as heterosexual, 12% have had a gay sexual experience.

20% of under-30s have had  a sexual experience with a member of the same sex, and 25% of 30-44 year-olds.

Just six percent of African-Americans said they have had a sexual experience with a member of the same sex – indicative of the stigma in the black community. 20% of white people and 15% of Hispanic people have done so.

Meanwhile, 12% of Republicans say they have had a sexual experience with a member of the same sex – despite the party’s homophobic stance – compared to 19% of Democrats.

The Republican National Convention recently threw its weight behind a law that would permit discrimination against LGBT people, while a number of the party’s Presidential candidates are overtly anti-gay. Texas Governor Rick Perry has compared homosexuality to alcoholism.

17 Republicans candidates are currently vying for the party’s nomination to run for President.

12% of 17 is two, in case anyone was wondering…
