Netflix has renewed sci-fi drama series Sense8 for a second series.

The acclaimed series was launched by sibling directors Lana and Andrew Wachowski earlier this year – focussing on eight individuals around the globe with an apparent psychic connection.

The show features openly trans actress Jamie Clayton – making it notable as the first mainstream show to have an openly trans writer (Lana Wachowski) penning a trans role for an openly transgender actress.

The drama, which also explored the concept of sexuality, and featured a controversial group sex scene, was renewed by Netflix for a second season.

Netflix confirmed the news, tweeting: “Birthdays are just the beginning. #sense8 is reborn.”

In videos filmed by the cast, they said: “We’re coming back. Yay season two! Thank you fans for all your support.

“Happy birthday dear Sensates… and by the way, we’re coming back for a season two. That’s right!”

Netflix has not officially announced the plans to a press – but given the service’s usual model, the show is expected to return next year for another run of 12 episodes.

The show features Aml Ameen, Bae Doona, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemelt, Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Brian J Smith.

It also features former Doctor Who actress Freema Agyeman as the lesbian partner of Clayton’s character.
