A man has actually tried to tie the knot with his lawnmower – after a Republican congressman claimed it is legal to do so because of same-sex marriage.

Rep. Steve King made the claim this week while speaking at a campaign event for Republican Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee.

Speaking about the Supreme Court ruling that brought same-sex marriage to all 50 states, King has claimed: “Their ruling really says anybody can marry anybody — and eventually it will be in any combination”, adding: “It only requires one human being in this relationship… you could marry your lawnmower with this decision.”

Following his claim, one man actually tried to marry his lawnmower at his local clerk’s office.

Incredibly, the clerk answers the request with a straight face, explaining: “The answer to that would be no.”

Raising that the lawnmower is only 6 years old, she explains: “You have to be 18 years old to get a marriage license, and the other party has to be able to sign a contract, has to have a government ID, and has to have a witness who says they can enter into a contract.

“For those reasons alone you can’t marry your lawnmower.”

On discovering the man is already married to a woman, she adds: “I should probably have asked that question first. If you’re still married, obviously you can’t enter into a contract.”

“No marriage because you’re married, and no marriage with a lawnmower. It’s an inanimate object. You cannot marry your lawnmower.”
