Orange is the new Black star Ruby Rose has revealed that she considered undergoing gender reassignment surgery when she was younger.

The genderfluid actress – who appeared on the Netflix prison drama as androgynous love interest Stella – addressed her gender while speaking to Access Hollywood.

When asked if she considered transitioning, she said: “When I was younger, for sure.

“I had this jar in which I would collect dollars …I had like 19 cents to go towards this surgery that I didn’t really know a lot about.

“I think I’d seen a daytime documentary, probably something on Oprah. I started saving from the age of like five.”

However, she added: “When I got to 15, I got more into my body and I shaved my head.

“I started to change the way that I dressed and talked and I realised that I didn’t want to transition and I just wanted to be more comfortable in my own skin.”

Ruby Rose released a video last year exploring her perception of non-traditional gender identities.

The star wrote and produced a 5 minute video set to Butterfly Boucher’s ‘It Pulls Me Under’, where Rose transitions from female to male.

She said at the time: “It’s weird, some of the androgynous photos I have taken lately really make me wonder what I’d have looked like if I did a FTM transition like I wanted to when I was younger.

“I am a woman, but I would have been just as comfortable as a boy.

“I know a lot of people don’t understand that, but I know a few of you do.”
