US basketball star Brittney Griner has filed an annulment of her marriage to her pregnant wife – just 28 days after the pair tied the knot.

The Phoenix Mercury star popped the question to fellow basketball player Glory Johnson last August – and the pair last month tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Phoenix on May 8.

Ms Johnson later announced she was pregnant, revealing this Thursday: “It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love.”

However, just two days after announcing the pregnancy the pair – who were arrested last month after a fight broke out between them – have announced they have split, and will annul their marriage.

Ms Griner told ESPN that the marriage was a mistake, saying: “Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment.

“In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counselling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”

Johnson’s agent DJ Fisher told ESPN that Johnson was “extremely hurt and blindsided” by the split.

Fisher said: “She loves Brittney and made a huge sacrifice to carry a child, put her career on hold, invest in their relationship and their future.”
