Lesbian couple in Florida granted divorce
A lesbian couple in Tampa, Florida have been granted a divorce.
Despite a request from Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi for the appellate courts to wait for a Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, the 2nd District Court of Appeals ruled on Friday.
The ruling reversed an order by a Hillsborough Circuit judge who declined to grant a divorce to Keiba Lynn Shaw and Mariama Changamire Shaw.
The order read: “For the reasons expressed in this court’s recent opinion in Brandon-Thomas v. Brandon-Thomas … we reverse and remand for further proceedings.”
It also referred to a previous case from Lee County, in which a court recommended that a divorce be granted to a lesbian couple.
Despite having settled all issues through mediation, the Shaws who married in Massachusetts, simply asked for their marriage to legally be dissolved.
