Black lesbian conference gets torrents of racist, homophobic abuse on Facebook

A retreat for black lesbians has been forced to remove a Facebook page – after going viral and receiving racist, homophobic abuse.

A new internet trend has seen thousands of people click ‘attending’ on seemingly-small scale public events – with over 100,000 people randomly pledging to attend the flute recital by a student at the University of California, Azeem Ward, last month.

However, while Ward became a minor internet celebrity, the stunt did not go so well when thousands of internet users – mostly white men – decided to ‘attend’ the event for a retreat held in California by Black Lesbians United.

The group’s page was quickly overrun with disgusting racist and homophobic abuse, with some users asking if they could come because they “know a black guy” and offering to “bring the KFC”.

Others posted links to hardcore lesbian porn, while one man commented: “i’m a straight white boy but have big ambititions to one day be a black lesbian”.

Not all the commenters were abusive, however, with one writing: “To the black lesbians who only came to this page to find happiness and acceptance in their sexuality I want to give a sincere apology for the twisted sick people who have written racist or homophobic comments to you.

“Nobody deserves to be treated that way no matter how f**king funny those idiots think they are. Keep being proud of who you are and don’t listen to the insecure people below xx Once again I am truly sorry.”

Following the huge amount of abuse, Black Lesbians United removed the event page, confirming: “We did cancel the facebook notification of our BLU retreat, but the retreat itself is still on!”
