Speaking on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT), President Obama has said “there is so much more to do”.

Celebrating steps forward, in a statement released today, the US President vowed to “keep fighting, for however long it takes, until we are all able to live free and equal in dignity and rights.”

Going on, he said “LGBT rights are human rights”, and said: “There is so much more to do” throughout the country – and worldwide.

“All people deserve to live free from fear, violence, and discrimination, regardless of who they are or whom the love,” he said.

The President has evolved over the past several years on LGBT issues, having signed the repeal of the US military’s ban on openly gay members Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in 2010.

He since gave his endorsement to same-sex marriage in 2012, and in 2014 signed an executive order protecting the rights of trans federal employees.

Last month Obama called for an end to “gay cure” therapies on minors.
