David Hockney has said he thinks gay people are boring, because they “want to be ordinary”.

In an interview with the Guardian, the 77-year-old famed artist said he thinks “everywhere is so conservative”.

Hockney, who is openly gay himself, said the reason he thought so was because gay people “want to be ordinary – they want to fit in.” He went on to say he wouldn’t want to marry a man, saying: “No, no, no.”

The artist, despite supporting the rights of gay people, has for a long time declared himself against the idea of getting married.

He did not only take aim at gay people, he said he thought a “drug-free” and “drink-free” Bohemia had also happened.

“Bohemia was against the suburbs, And now the suburbs have taken over,” he said.

In 2011, Hockney declined to paint the Queen, saying he was too busy painting landscapes.

“When I was asked, I told them I was very busy painting England actually. Her country,” he said at the time, adding, “I generally only paint people I know, I’m not a flatterer really.”

Hockney last year spoke movingly about losing so many of his friends to AIDS at the height of the epidemic in America.
