A church in Milledgeville, Georgia displayed a sign reading “Homosexuality is a death worthy crime”.

Local resident Robert Owens said he was shocked by the sign: “I saw the sign and thought I can’t possibly have read that correctly.

“This is the first time that I have ever seen anything that actually crossed the line and was inferring death upon a group.

“I have a gay brother and a lesbian niece and don’t want them to come here and visit me and see a sign like that.”

The Ten Commandments Church has displayed controversial signs in the past, including one that declared gay and lesbian people “a disgrace to humanity” and “an abomination”.

The latest sign is in reaction to the Supreme Court hearing arguments on whether to allow for same-sex marriage across the United States.

Pastor Robert Lee of said: “Homosexuality is an abomination, and the Bible says that homosexuality is a death worthy crime.

“The institution of marriage was instituted by God and it should not be changed by people who deserve not to live.

“Before I accept homosexuality I will die.”

Last month five different florists in Georgia said they would not serve a same-sex wedding.
