The Labour Party has released its manifesto ahead of next month’s election, and included within were several pledges related to LGBT issues.

If elected, the party has pledged to introduce age-appropriate sex and relationships education (SRE), and has pledged to “stop the blight of homophobic bullying.”

The manifesto reads: “Children develop and learn best when they are secure and happy. We needto help our children develop the creativity, self-awareness and emotional skills they need to get on in life. We will introduce compulsory age-appropriate sex and relationships education. We will encourage all schools to embed character education across the curriculum, working with schools to stop the blight of homophobic bullying.”

In addition, the Labour Party has pledged to “take a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime, such as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. We will challenge prejudice before it grows, whether in schools, universities or on social media. And we will strengthen the law on disability, homophobic, and transphobic hate crime.”

Noting the appointment of Lord Cashman as International LGBT Rights Envoy, if the Labour Party is elected, the manifesto says the party would ensure that Britain would use its influence abroad.

It reads: “We will appoint an International LGBT Rights Envoy to promote respect for the human rights of LGBT people, and work towards the decriminalisation of homosexuality worldwide.”

The manifesto adds: “We will also build on our history of championing LGBT rights, tackling homophobia with tougher laws at home and greater engagement abroad.”
