Academy Award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black has said he believes Ireland will vote for marriage equality in Ireland.

Speaking to Irish radio station Newstalk, Black said he felt equal marriage will become the “law of the land”.

He said: “I believe that marriage equality will be the law of the land in Ireland by the end of May and I think it’s a beautiful thing. It says something really wonderful about the Irish people.”

Black, who is in a relationship with Olympian Tom Daley, said the rights of minority groups are a crucial part of democracy.

He said: “I think it’s the cornerstone of a democracy to protect the minority from the tyranny of a majority.”

The same-sex marriage referendum will take place on May 22. The exact wording of the referendum will be: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.”

Black also spoke about his experiences with his sexual orientation and offered some advice to those struggling with their own.

He said: “My journey with my Mom, my family… it wasn’t all good all the time. My Mom didn’t understand right away. There was a period there of a lot of heartbreak and certainly with a lot of my extended family.

“Keep the avenues of communication open, keep talking about it because it’s about misinformation, that’s where homophobia comes from.”
