Normon Reedus has revealed that rumours his Walking Dead character is gay upset the show’s female fans.

Fans have long held suspicions about the sexuality of his character in the zombie drama, Daryl Dixon – who has never had a romantic storyline despite several close friendships with women.

Both Reedus and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman have weighed in on the rumours in the past – but in an interview on Conan this week, Reedus revealed the plotline was still a possibility.

He told Conan: “I had a talk with [ex-showrunner] Frank Darabont early on.

“They asked ‘would you do it?’ and I said ‘hell yeah, let’s do it!’.

“When that rumour went around, I’d go to conventions and I’d have little kids come up to me and say ‘I don’t care what’s going on, you’re awesome!’

“Then you’d have guys my age or older be like ‘uhhhh….’, and then you’d have women being like ‘you’d better not be!’

“The truth is, if that’s the story they gave me, I would rock that story. I’m not afraid of that.”

The zombie drama debuted its first gay characters last month – with newcomers Aaron and Eric sharing a kiss on-screen.

Twitter was full of homophobic abuse after the incident – despite the show featuring the murder of young children, cannibalism, brutal disembowelment and torture in the past.
