The first openly gay NFL player will appear in Season 20 of Dancing With the Stars.

Michael Sam will join the cast of the 20th Season of Dancing With the Stars next month.

Sam, who was the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL, will dance with Peta Murgatroyd.

Athletes have performed well on the show previously but Sam didn’t think it would necessarily work in his advantage.

He told Good Morning America: “I just think I’m athletic and I can perform. I’m a competitor and I know Peta is too.”

The show will begin its 20th season on March 16th and will feature ten other celebrities, such as music icon Pati LaBelle and singer Redfoo, competing to win the mirror ball cup.

Michael Sam recently spoke about the moment he knew he was gay. He said he was “pretty damn sure” that he “didn’t like girls” the first time he was with a man. He also promised he would keep fighting for the rights of young LGBT people “until my legs break.”

In January he proposed to his fiancé Vito Cammisano at the Vatican. He frequently thanks Vito for being the person who made him feel comfortable in his own skin.
