Jon Snow has spoken about the Irish same-sex marriage referendum, saying that love between two human beings should be respected “whatever their sex”.

During an interview on Newstalk’s Pat Kenny Show, the Channel 4 News presenter said: “The democratic world is moving towards and understanding and acceptance of and equal rights of transsexual and gay people and I think that’s right.”

“Even the Pope said, ‘Who am I to judge?’ which I thought was a lovely thing to say. I mean, very difficult for him to say, ‘Well, I’d like to legalise it’ and all the rest of it within the Church. He’ll never be able to do that.”

“But things are all moving in that direction and if a human loves a human whatever their sex it’s got to be respected,” the broadcaster added.

Snow added: “It’s not for me as a completely objective hack to say what anybody in Ireland should do.”

Last year, Snow took part in Channel 4’s ‘Our Gay Wedding: The Musical’, timed to coincide with the arrival of same-sex marriage in England and Wales.

The broadcaster appeared singing several times throughout the show on 31 March, which featured the real wedding of grooms Benjamin Till and Nathan Taylor on the day that same-sex marriages became legal.

The Republic of Ireland is set to vote in May on a proposal that would legalise civil same-sex marriage.

Last week, Katherine Zappone, Ireland’s only out lesbian senator, said the country “stands poised to become a beacon of freedom” if it passes same-sex marriage.

Earlier this month a poll showed 62% of voters were in favour of the reform; 16% were opposed and 22% undecided on how they would vote.
