One of the bars at the heart of Manchester’s gay village has denied reports that it is closing for good.

Brazil Street venue Eden Bar – which has served the gay community for over a decade – initially shut its doors last month for a “facelift”.

However, it was revealed this week that liquidators have been called in to parent company SDB Bars.

A statement from insolvency practitioner Steven Wiseglass had said: “It is unfortunate that SDB Bars could not continue trading, and sadly there have been 18 redundancies as a result of the closure of Eden Bar.”

A spokesperson for Eden Bar claims that the statement is inaccurate – and insists the venue will re-open under new owners.

A statement said: “The previous owners of Eden did go into liquidation earlier this month… However… Venue was immediately bought and is currently having a refurb.

“As the [Manchester Evening News] didn’t contact us for comment, meant a very one sided / partial report.

“We had hoped to reopen beginning of February, but work progressing slower than expected! Once a date for reopening is confirmed, we will be contacting all friends and regulars of Eden via FB and twitter.

“Rest assured work is ongoing within the venue to spruce the old lady up tho… be glad to welcome everyone back for a gin soon!”
