Gay rights campaigner Ivan Massow – who is running for Mayor of London – has announced he is expecting a baby.

Mr Massow is an openly gay businessman who first rose to prominence in the 1990s, when he began offering financial services and insurance specially catered to gay people.

He revealed in November that he would seek the Conservative nomination to succeed Boris Johnson as Mayor of London.

The entrepreneur announced today that he is expecting his first child alongside a lesbian couple – who he met through an online co-parenting site.

He told the Mail: “I’m really excited. It’s strange knowing you are going to become a father. It gives me a sense of peace. It completely changes your relationship with the world.

“I’ve wanted to do this for such a long time I thought if I don’t do it now I’ll probably be too old.

“I know the situation is odd. But I thought ‘go for it’.

” went down the internet route, because I didn’t want some mock relationship with friends. Those relationships fall to pieces sometimes.

“I wanted to start with a matter-of-fact agreement and build a rock-solid friendship. And this way the child has two mothers.”

He told the Sunday Times: “The baby will move between two households. They [the other parents] are a couple. I am fortunate in
that I do have space to accommodate them as well, so that can happen.

“Having a child is something I really wanted to do for so long and if I don’t do it now, my chance is over. There is never a right time in anyone’s life. It’s one of these things I just have to do.”

The baby is due in August – well before the election for Mayor of London, which is set to take place on May 5, 2016.

Mr Massow attracted controversy last year when he complained that today’s gay scene seems “obsessed” with drugs and sex, resulting in an empty world of hedonism.
