Stephen Fry’s fiancé Elliott Spencer might not be off to the best start – after crashing his car into the side of his garage.

The QI host announced his engagement to the stand up comedian yesterday, after a number of tabloid newspapers reported the news.

Mr Spencer scraped the TV host’s prized Bentley Continental GT yesterday, as the pair attempted to make a getaway from press camped outside their home.

Mr Fry did not seem to be too upset by the incident, however, shrugging the scrape off as “nothing”.

The pair’s engagement has caused a furore of media reaction, with a number of outlets highlighting the age gap between the two and the Express branding Mr Spencer a “toyboy”.

The Hobbit star tweeted yesterday: “Couple of journos parked outside my place. Wonder what I should do? Have said “nothing to say thanks” but they’re still there. Hmmm.”

He later added: “Some good suggestions as to what to do with my door-stepping journos. Everything from sandwiches to Rottweilers. Maybe coffee is the answer.”

Then: “Grrr. Number of journos outside has now doubled. They obviously heard about the free coffee. Perhaps that was a mistake!”

Mr Fry conceded that “a certain cat is out of a certain bag”, but added he had “hoped for a private wedding”.
