The death has been announced of former Labour minister Alan Williams who had a strong voting record on gay rights.

Mr Williams served 46 years continuously as an MP.

The 84-year-old had been in a nursing home in London for six months after suffering a stroke and died on Sunday night, said his successor as MP for Swansea West, Geraint Davies.

As prices and wages minister in the 1970s, he was “at the heart of the storm” of the industrial unrest that engulfed the James Callaghan government, Mr Davies said.

Mr Williams voted in favour of equalising the age of consent, he voted in favour of the repeal of Section 28, he voted in favour of civil partnerships and adoption rights for same-sex couples.

He was absent from the vote on the Equality Act in 2007. The MP stepped down from Parliament at the 2010 general election.

His successor, Geraint Davies, has campaigned extensively for statutory regulation of psychotherapists in order to guard against gay-to-straight conversion therapy.
