Out US football star Robbie Rogers has spoken in an interview about being proud to have come out as gay, and the first time he slept with a guy.

Rogers came out publicly as gay in February 2013 and immediately announced his retirement from football, instantly departing Leeds United as a midfielder.

He later reversed his decision to quit the game and signed for US team LA Galaxy.

In an ‘En Route’ interview with GQ Magazine, Rogers, the magazine’s ‘Man of the Year’ is asked a series of questions.

When asked what a Man of the Year means, he said they would be “secure in their sexuality and isn’t afraid of what people think.”

“I’m most proud of the journey I’ve taken from being a closeted athlete and playing professionally for 6-7 years, and then coming to terms with myself and having the courage to come out.”

Given the choice of talking about losing his virginity or doing a forfeit, Rogers chooses the former.

He says: “First time with a girl was in high school. I think it was my junior year of high school. Still friends. It was actually alright, you know I’m a gay guy. I don’t know how she enjoyed it or if she enjoyed it as much as me. First time with a guy was actually not until I was 25, after I came out – super awkward. I mean, can you imagine dating and hooking up with a guy after your coming out, after 25 years? I’m sure he was like, ‘What is going on?’ I think I’ve gotten a little better at doing all that stuff so hopefully those embarassing moments are over.”

Rogers’ new book ‘Coming Out to Play’ is out now.
