A family from the Channel 4 series Gogglebox with a gay son, has left the show in order for the dad to stand for UKIP in the general election.

The Michael Family, from Brighton, confirmed this week that they had left the show,  and that father, Andrew, will stand for the East Sussex seat of Hastings and Rye seat for UKIP.

The seat is currently held by Tory MP Amber Rudd.

“Mr Michael has confirmed his proposed candidacy as a UKIP MP,” Channel 4 said.

“Any Gogglebox cast member who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to step down from their involvement in Gogglebox.

“It’s with great regret that the Michaels are no longer in the show. They have been excellent contributors to Gogglebox, and we are very grateful for all they have given to the show.”

The family had appeared on the programme since March 2013.

Louis Michael, Andrew’s son, is gay, and regularly tweets about gay rights.
