Austria’s Eurovision winning drag star Conchita Wurst has apparently attracted a lot of attention this year – appearing as one of the world’s most Googled terms.

One Russian MP said Wurst’s Eurovision victory signified “the end of Europe,” and following her victory, Russia developed plans to revive a Soviet era Eurovision rival as a ‘family friendly’ alternative, but the idea was quietly dropped this summer.

The Austrian singer – who took home the crown at Eurovision in May despite a homophobic backlash across Europe – has recently completed a string of high-profile engagements, performing a set in early October at the European Parliament in Brussels, as part of a non-discrimination event.

Apparently she caused a stir one way or another – becoming the seventh most searched term of this year according to Google.

Interestingly, and potentially because of an international outry around the Sochi Winter Olympics this year because of Russia’s anti-gay law, the competition was the 10th most searched.

The term “World Cup” appeared second. Qatar – a country notorious for its anti-gay laws – was last month cleared to host the 2022 World Cup by football’s governing body.

Robin Williams was the most searched term globally this year. The actor killed himself in August this year, just weeks after the film Boulevard was shown to positive reviews at Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
