Channel 4 has unveiled a risqué first teaser for a new gay-themed series from Queer as Folk creator Russell T Davies.

The former Doctor Who showrunner has spoken for some time about his plans for Channel 4 show Cucumber, E4 companion show Banana and online companion Tofu – which will explore “the passions and pitfalls of 21st century gay life”.

The broadcaster unveiled the first trailer for the three shows this week – but they give little away, showing food engaging in sex acts.

Cucumber will feature Vincent Franklin as a gay man in his 40s who finds himself attracted to a younger man. The show will also feature Rufus Hound and Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh.

Companion series Banana, which will air on E4, is aimed at a younger demographic, and will feature Luke Newberry of zombie drama In the Flesh.

YouTube star Benjamin Cook will front online spinoff, Tofu, exploring real gay sex stories with contributions from the public.

Explaining the concept, Russell T Davies said: “I once read about a scientific institute which had studied the male erection.

“It divided the hard-on into four categories, from soft to hard. One, tofu. Two, peeled banana. Three, banana. And four, cucumber. Right there and then I knew I had my drama.”

He first told PinkNews about the plans in an exclusive 2011 interview, saying “It’s the best thing I’ve written in a decade.”

The three shows are slated to launch in early 2015.
