The Sun on blind, trans Labour candidate: ‘How did she know she was the wrong sex?’

Writing in the Sun newspaper, Rod Liddle has asked how a blind, trans Labour Parliamentary Candidate knew “she was the wrong sex”.

Earlier this week, in a rare move, Labour’s Emily Brothers, who is standing for Parliament in Sutton and Cheam, came out as transgender in an interview with PinkNews.

Reporting on the coming out today, Rod Liddle, former editor of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today Programme’, wrote in the Sun: “She’ll be standing at the next election in the constituency of Sutton and Cheam. Thing is though, being blind, how did she know she was the wrong sex?”

The leader of the Labour Party Ed Miliband has tweeted his support for Brothers.

Mr Miliband said: “So proud to have Emily Brothers as a Labour candidate. She is an important voice in our movement.”

While there have been openly trans local councillors, and Nicky Sinclair who represented UKIP at the European Parliament before leaving the party, this is believed to be the first time a Parliamentary Candidate for a major party has come out as transgender without being outed.

A Lib Dem PPC Stephanie Dearden was outed as transgender in 2005 by the Daily Mail.
