Enrique Iglesias and Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff are raising awareness of HIV by speaking about their own experiences of losing friends to the virus before successful treatment became available.

The stars talked to MTV’s Someone Like Me campaign at the recent MTV European Music Awards in Glasgow.

Created by Durex and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, the campaign aims to promote safer-sex among young people and to provide a forum where sexual health can be discussed.

Asked why condoms are important, David Hasselhoff replied: “It’s really important, I know if you go out and have a couple drinks you can forget how important it is, I’ve had several people die in my life that were really close to me because of a one night stand”.

The star added: “If you don’t think (HIV) can happen just ask me and I’ll tell you – it can happen to anyone.”

Enrique Iglesias was also asked why it’s important to raise awareness of HIV among today’s younger generation.

The singer replied: “I grew up in the eighties. I actually have a lot of friends of my parents that died of HIV/AIDS. So it’s extremely important, I think younger kids should take that seriously and just have safe sex, all the time”.

Figures released this week by Public Health England showed 3,250 gay and bisexual men were diagnosed with HIV last year – the highest ever figure.

One in eight gay and bisexual men in London is HIV positive.

There are now nearly 110,000 people living with HIV in the UK.

World AIDS Day takes place on 1st December.
