Major award-winning director Mike Nichols famed for directing The Birdcage has died, aged 83.

Nichols, who was one of only twelve people to have won all four major US entertainment accolades – an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony, died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday.

The German-born director was married to ABC News presenter Diane Sawyer.

He won an Oscar for directing the Graduate, and was nominated for list of other accolades for his extensive list of works.

Nichols’ family, which includes his three children, are planning a small, private ceremony this week.

Robin Williams – who played a gay character in cult classic The Birdcage – was earlier this year found dead in his home.
