Reports from Burnaby’s municipal election in Canada have claimed that one party is circulating rumours that school children will be injected with a “serum” to turn them gay.

According to Huffpost British Colombia, the rumours warn injections will be administrated if the Burnaby Citizens Association (BCA) camp of incumbent Mayor Derek Corrigan is allowed to continue in office.

One parent said that a volunteer with the opposition Burnaby First Coalition told her the BCA supports “the gays.”

The parent added: “They’re going to give [the children] an injection to make them gay.”

According to BCA school trustee Harman Pandher, the rumour has been circulating only through the Mandarin-speaking community.

He said he first heard of the rumour in late October while door knocking for the BCA campaign.

“I had an encounter with one family, and I heard that others had some information come their way as well,” he said.

“It’s pretty outrageous, in this day and age, these types of things are being believed.”

He added: “We’re not hearing this in the mainstream media, we’re not hearing this at all-candidates’ events or on party websites – it’s being done sneakily and it’s unfortunate.”

However, Burnaby First Coalition’s mayoral candidate Daren Hancott has denied his party has been spreading false rumours.

He told CBC News: “I’ve talked to all of our candidates. I’ve talked to as many supporters as I could.”

“Nobody knew what was going on. I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on here and what it means.”

He added he believed every child “deserves respect and equal treatment in the school system so they can reach their full potential.”
