The Republican candidate for South Carolina Anthony Culler has invoked the movie “Gremlins” to describe same-sex couples, saying they are not “cute and cuddly” but seek to destroy our way of life.

On a Facebook post made on the 14 October, the candidate for the 6th Congressional District launched a rant against same-sex marriage.

He said: “Same-sex ‘marriage’ is a pestilence that has descended on our society, against our will, by those in the courts and government that do not value the traditional family.

“Same-sex couples that seek to destroy our way of life and the institution of marriage are NOT cute and cuddly but rather (for those of you that are old enough to remember the movie), Gremlins that will only destroy our way of life.

“These people are bullies and now that they are winning their true and hateful nature is much easier to see and hear. (Watch the response to this post.)”

He added the only way to curb equal marriage is “not attend the ‘over the top’ and ‘anything goes’ ceremonies or parties that these people revel in.

“Look away from this scourge on society and condemn it. Starve it out and actively stand against this movement and those pushing it.”

Five couples had their requests for marriage licenses denied in Greenville, South Carolina in July.

They were turned away two days after the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes South Carolina, ruled that Virginia’s ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.

Despite the ruling South Carolina will continue to fight for the state’s same-sex marriage ban.

In February, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives had voted to cut a total of $70,000 (£41,500) in funding from the University of South Carolina Upstate and the College of Charleston, over the teaching of “gay-themed” books.
