Out actor Ezra Miller has been cast as superhero The Flash for an upcoming film.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower star, who came out as queer two years ago, has reportedly signed a three-film contract with Warner Bros to play the speedy superhero.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner chairman Kevin Tsujihara announced at an earning meeting that the actor is set to appear in a solo film for 2018, while he could also appear in the long-awaited Justice League films.

His casting marks the first time that an LGBT actor has been given the lead role in a DC or Marvel superhero film – though Sir Ian McKellen has a prominent role in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films.

It comes just after a separate Flash TV series launched on the CW – though the two projects are expected to be entirely unrelated.
