Laverne Cox has praised the creator of drama series Transparent, for pledging to recruit a transgender writer for the show’s second season.

Jill Solloway – who acts as showrunner on the Amazon series, which recently wrapped its first season – recently committed to accepting open applications from aspiring transgender writers who want to join the show.

She said: “No matter what we did, we were always going to be otherising Maura in some way.

“It’s absolutely necessary, and it’s gonna change the show.”

Orange is the New Black star and trans activist Laverne Cox has praised the show in an interview with Huffington Post.

She said: “I’ve seen Transparent, I love Transparent. There’s so much trans diversity on the show. There’s an unprecadented number of trans people with speaking parts.

“It’s interesting because working on Orange is the New Black, I just love what our writers come up with. It’s been wonderful as executive producer of the T Word, being in the room when it’s edited. I know that made a difference.

“I think that it is really important that trans folks are in positions of power in terms of creating our stories. I think that’s crucial. I think it’s vital.

“I don’t think you necessarily need to be trans to bring humanity to trans characters.

“I think you have to be human and understand that we are human beings too, beyond our bodies and beyond anything sort of salacious.”
