Former Arkansas Governor Mark Huckabee has said he is “utterly exasperated” with Republicans for abdicating on same-sex marriage.

A decision by the US Supreme Court on Monday to reject seven pending appeals against same-sex marriage will allow same-sex couples to marry in as many as eleven new states.

The former GOP Governor of Arkansas, who is also a pastor, spoke on American Family Radio about his anger at the Republicans for refusing to put up a fight.

He said: “I’m utterly exasperated with Republicans and the so-called leadership of the Republicans who have abdicated on this issue.

“If they continue in this direction, they guarantee they’re going to lose every election in the future.

” If Republicans want to lose guys like me and a whole bunch of still God-fearing, Bible-believing people, go ahead and abdicate on this issue and while your at it go ahead and say abortion doesn’t matter either. Because at that point, you’ll lose me.

‘I’ll become an independent. I’ll start finding people that have guts to stand. I’m tired of this.”

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down same-sex marriage bans in a ruling this week which specifically referred to Idaho and Nevada, but which was also hailed as an end to same-sex marriage bans in Alaska, Arizona and Montana too.

The Fox News presenter, former governor of Arkansas, and 2008 Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee warned in 2013 that “every fear” over same-sex marriage has come true, including “television commercials portraying same-sex couples.”

In 2012 Huckabee suggested a rejection of “natural law”, and “natural family of a father and mother”, were the reasons for the school massacre at Newtown, Connecticut.

He has previously stated that he opposes equal marriage partly because of the “ick factor”.
