India: Disabled trans woman dies after being pushed from a moving train

A 22-year-old trans woman has died after being pushed from a moving train by a group of young people.

The New India Express reports that the youths responsible for the death of Mahadevi in Bangalore, were chased by other passengers on the train, but that they escaped before authorities got there.

According to the paper, a boy who sells drinks on the train had notified members of Mahadevi’s community

Police said they were investigating the incident.

“We heard about a body on the tracks and have registered a case,” said a railway police official. “We are trying to ascertain if Mahadevi fell from the train or was pushed to [her] death.”

Mahadevi was reported as having a speech impediment, and used to beg on the train which ran from Bangalore to Hubli.
